about

THIS IS WHAT THE INTERNET SOUNDS LIKE

It is too often said that we are living in the age of information overload. Our daily lives are filled with frantic bombardments of data, in many ways that may cause us to become jaded and desensitized. We do not hear the indistinct white noise produced by this data smog. Then again, we may hear too much that meaning is lost or forgotten.

The Internet as the most prevalent vessel of white noise is largely a visual undertaking but what does it all sound like?

Glossolalia (The Harsh Sounds of the Internet) is a collection of raw sounds of random Internet data (html files, photos, text, etc). These contents have been converted, translated, and databended into audio using a variety of programs. The result is harsh and defining of our online culture and consumption. The piece shows, however, that with noise coexists sound, in which we may form our own meanings, which in turn form the rhythm of our lives. We struggle to hear through this raucous nebula but through critical subtraction and selection, our plights and intentions will be heard, whether we are speaking for ourselves, or for those without a voice.

More about Teenage Granny :

“Created by Alyana Cabral from Manila, Philippines, Teenage Granny is an electronic project that seeks to dismantle pop music to its purest elements, reassembling them into seamless amalgams and soundscapes via unorthodox methods not limited to musique concrète, glitch, drone, and databending, while fixating thematically on the
mundane aspects of life as viewed through contemporary and childish lens.” (Dominic Zinampan)

Her latest EP release, “Glossolalia (The Harsh Sounds of the Internet),” is a critique of our online culture and consumption, in the form of random internet data converted and translated into sound.

What lies at the core of Teenage Granny is a warping and questioning of pop and poetry, filtered through spontaneity, as reflected by her semi-improvised performances.
